The name Gracie represents without question, one of the most influential forces in the history of martial arts. Bringing their family’s fighting style of Jiu Jitsu from their home in Brazil to America in the late 1980’s, it quite literally, turned the world of fighting arts, “upside down”. The Gracie family’s unique style of Jiu Jitsu favored technique over strength and leverage over size. The Gracie family of brothers cut a swath through the fighting arts community taking on all fighters and all styles, regardless of size, strength or experience, without hesitation.  One of those brothers, Royce Gracie, went on to win 3 consecutive UFC championships at a time when there were no weight classes, no time limits, and NO RULES. This anytime, anyplace attitude led to the formation of the Ultimate Fighting Championships, the UFC.

Royce Gracie continued on in the family tradition of teaching naming his school of instruction, “Royce Gracie Jiu Jitsu”, becoming one of the most sought after instructors in the world. We are very proud to have been selected by Royce to teach Royce Gracie Jiu Jitsu at the Emerson Training Center.

At the center, the Royce Gracie system is taught by instructors, Royce Gracie black belt, Pat King and Royce Gracie brown belt Lynn Dorsey. Offered as programs for both children and adults, this dynamic self defense system is equally effective for men, women and children of all ages, whether on the playground, in the street or in the ring. Without question, the Gracie family system and Royce Gracie Jiu Jitsu has proven itself, for over 75 years, as one of the most effective means of self-defense ever developed. It has been taught to elite military and law enforcement, the world’s top tournament and MMA fighters and tens of thousands of civilian enthusiasts worldwide.  And, it is now offered at the Emerson Training Center here in Harbor City, California.

The martial art of Judo was founded by the legendary Japanese Master Jigaro Kano in 1882. Judo was probably the first Japanese martial art introduced to the west, most notably through the U.S. military in the modern era. As American GIs were introduced to the Japanese culture from the early 1900’s onward it was inevitable that the martial art of Judo found its way into the American culture. In fact, various aspects of Judo were taught to all U.S. military police as an effective way to deal with arresting and controlling drunken, brawling GIs without seriously harming them.  Being recognized as so effective in combat, Judo also became the basis for most of the hand-to-hand combat skills taught to soldiers in basic training throughout all branches of the U.S. military.

Today, modern Judo retains its effectiveness as a practical combat art and self defense system as well as competitive tournament sport.

Changed very little from the original style created by Jigaro Kano, modern Judo from the 1950’s onward gained worldwide popularity, having teams, schools and competitions represented by almost every country in the world, being the first martial art officially given Olympic status in 1964.

Although translated from the Japanese language as meaning,” the gentle way,” the study of Judo and its training is physically demanding, strenuous and requires dedication and discipline. It is one of the best martial arts for children because it gives kids the perfect combination of hard work, exercise, discipline and self-confidence so lacking in most other children’s sports or activities.

The Judo instruction taught here by highly rated Judo Black Belt, Dave Dunphy is from the same system that has produced two, U.S. Olympic Team, Judo Competitors.

It is also important to note that the Judo as taught here at the Emerson Training Center is equally effective for self-defense as well as tournament Judo competition.

Classes offered at the Emerson Training Center are children’s Judo, adult Judo and mixed children’s/adult Judo.

Our children’s program at the Emerson Training Center is one of the most comprehensive and effective programs of its kind in the world. In a time when children spend more time in front of a computer than around the dinner table with their parents, the Emerson Training Center provides a safe, training environment filled with positive role models and a vehicle for becoming involved in a wonderful physical activity that teaches self defense, self confidence and self esteem.

The training center program is built around hard work, ethics, morals, honesty and the best children’s self defense program in the world, Royce Gracie Jiu Jitsu. This proven self defense system that does not rely on strength or size for success and does not force a child to retaliate using striking techniques like kicking or punching as taught in other arts such as karate or Tae Kwon Do. The Gracie family techniques present a much more humane way of physically dealing with a bully. If your child is ever the subject of a bully attack and is forced to retaliate as a last resort, it is much easier to explain that your child merely made the bully cry, “uncle,” than to be sitting in front of school authorities, trying to justify that your child is the victim, while sitting across from the bully, who has a black eye and a bloody lip.

In reality, the training children receive in this program gives your child the ability to avoid violence as a last resort and provides tools and strategies (knowledge) of how to deal with bullies by removing themselves from the bullies radar screen and establishing, strong self confidence and the “I’m not a victim”, mentality.

In addition you (parents) will be provided with an extensive   anti- bullying guideline program that can further both you and your child’s awareness of bully behavior and how to deal with it effectively  through a variety of means.

The children’s program taught at the Emerson Training Center is not just about the physical aspects of self-defense. In addition to that, what is taught here are life’s most valuable skills. The principles of hard work, courage, discipline, team work, nutrition, morals, ethics and honesty are woven into the fabric of instruction and are constantly stressed, discussed and reinforced during the course of curriculum instruction. And, at times we will provide motivational speakers to talk about succeeding in school, athletics (sports),behavior at home with the family and of course the importance of always, “doing the right thing”.

Our instructors are strict yet fair and constantly strive to build your child’s self esteem, a genuine self esteem, which is only gained through the efforts of hard work, overcoming failure, striving to persevere against difficulty and in the end, succeeding as a result of their efforts. This type of self esteem, true not false esteem, is the kind  that lasts a lifetime.

In addition, to encourage the spirit of competition, several of the students compete in a number of the various Jiu Jitsu tournaments held in the area.

Now, fully integrated with the concepts, principles and techniques of Royce Gracie Jiu Jitsu, it is quite probably the best self defense, Edged Weapons Program ever developed. Bringing together the best in Hand-to-Hand combat with the best in Edged Weapons Training has married the practical realities of both systems into one. This program deals with all aspects of armed combat;

Unarmed against knife
Knife against unarmed
Knife against weapon(s)
Knife against knife

In the words of Ernest Emerson, “In order to fight with a knife, you have to be able to fight without one. This isn’t about knife fighting, it’s about fighting…..with knives.”

This integrated concept is the basis for the Edged Weapons Training Program taught at the Center and pioneered by the world’s leading authority on Tactical Edged Weapons –Ernest Emerson.  Now coupled with the proven techniques of the world’s best system of self defense, Royce Gracie Jiu Jitsu, this program provides the skills and strategies needed to survive armed combat.
